The new free family tree printing feature from Geneafinder transforms your tree into a clear, aesthetic, and ready-to-share document with your family. This feature is now integrated into Geneafinder's free features, accessible as soon as you have created an account and an online tree.
To access it, simply open your tree and click on Tree > Print Tree in the top bar of the interface.
🖨️ Why printing your family tree is essential
The printed tree materializes hours of research and makes your work immediately readable by the whole family.
In France, several million people declare an interest in genealogy, and more than half have already conducted research on their ancestors; however, 42% do not know the name of a single one of their great-grandparents. Presenting a clear and illustrated family tree helps bridge the gap between interest and real knowledge.
Your relatives understand at a glance the lineages, surnames, and generations.
A printed tree can be stored, commented on, corrected with a pen, filed in a binder, or framed on the wall.
It's a perfect starting point to gather memories from elders, annotate usernames, or identify family photos.
The tree models offered by Geneafinder are designed for this transmission: readable, structured by generation, and adapted to different levels of depth.
You can thus create a short version for children and a more detailed version for family history enthusiasts.
💡 How to access the family tree printing function
To use this feature, three steps are sufficient:
Create a free Geneafinder account with your email address.
Create a new tree or import an existing GEDCOM file, without size limits.
Open your tree in the main view and choose the person who will serve as the basis for the ancestry.
Next, from the top bar, click on Tree then Print Tree: a parameter window opens to customize your document.
The root person can be the first individual entered, the youngest person, or a personalized individual you select from the list, for example, a symbolic ancestor or yourself.
🌱 Main family tree printing options
Choose the root person and number of generations
In the printing window, you first define the root person of the ancestry, thanks to three possibilities: first individual in the tree, youngest, or custom choice via a search field.
This flexibility allows you to create as many versions of the ancestry as you want, for each branch or family member.
You then select the number of generations to display (for example, 4, 5, or 6 generations depending on the depth of your research).
This is a strategic setting: a reduced number facilitates readability, a higher number highlights the richness of your discoveries.
Set the paper format and reading direction
The printing interface offers a choice of paper size (from A4 to large format A0) depending on your needs: document easy to print at home or larger format to entrust to a printer.
The reading direction can be set to “male then female” or “female then male”, which determines the position of the paternal and maternal branches on the tree. This setting is precious if you want to harmonize your trees with your work habits or those of your usual software.
It also facilitates comparison between different printed trees within the same family group.
Customize the graphic background and aesthetics
The family tree printing function integrates a module for customizing the background:
Pure white background for maximum readability.
Discreet historical pattern for a more decorative result.
Watercolor tree illustration, pastel gradient, aged paper, or checkered pattern for a warm or vintage style.
You can also adjust the opacity of the boxes so that the information remains perfectly readable on the chosen background. This graphic customization is particularly appreciated when you want to frame the tree or give it as a gift for a birthday, wedding, or family reunion.
👉 How to get the most out of the printed family tree
Check consistency and spot missing information
Printing your ancestry allows you to immediately see incomplete branches, missing dates, or poorly documented surnames.
This is an excellent complement to Geneafinder's control tools (missing date estimator, completion color code, tree verifier for consistency in Premium offers).
In practice, you can highlight incomplete boxes on the paper version, then plan new research in the archives based on these areas. This visual method structures your work and prevents you from getting distracted.
Prepare a presentation or family booklet
Printed trees integrate easily into a PDF folder, a family booklet, or a presentation projected during a family gathering.
Geneafinder also allows you to export a PDF booklet of your genealogy, classified by generation.
For example, you can insert the ancestry of a couple at the beginning of a booklet tracing the history of each of their branches.
This approach provides a visual framework for reading biographies or archival documents.
A simple, free, and professional family tree printing
With this new feature, Geneafinder allows every genealogist to transform their digital tree into a printed document that is elegant, perfectly adapted for verification, organization, and family transmission. By combining graphic customization, precise genealogy settings, and free access, printing family trees becomes a central tool in your strategy to tell and share your family story.
